— Jimena Murillo Guerrero, University Neighborhood Partners (UNP) “From Neighbors to Leaders: The Impact of Working Together for Our Community” In this episode of Su Salud al Día, Pablo Tellechea interviews Jimena Murillo Guerrero, Social Worker and Partnership Administrator with the Population Health Center and University Neighborhood Partners (UNP) at the University of Utah, to examine the collaborative model of the UNP Hartland Partnership Center in Glendale, on Salt Lake City’s west side. Unlike traditional assistance organizations, this decentralized center does not impose outside solutions or duplicate existing efforts; instead, it serves as a bridge connecting three key stakeholders: the local community, the University of Utah, and various community organizations. Operating under the premise that residents themselves are the experts on their own lives and needs, the program identifies social determinants of health—such as access to English classes, higher education, after-school youth programs, and safe public spaces—and channels resources directly into the neighborhood. With a team where approximately 80% of the staff is bilingual and more than half reside on the west side, the initiative encourages neighbors to become leaders and case managers so that solutions remain sustainable over the long term. This approach demonstrates how neighborhood involvement directly shaped the design of the new hospital in West Valley and how grassroots, self-managed initiatives can revitalize everyday spaces like parks and youth sports. “Our mission in the organization is truly to empower voices that haven't been historically heard because that brings greater long-term benefits than if we simply provided services ourselves. In other words, if the community can empower itself, take on leadership, and advocate for itself, then they can sustain it.”
